Develop dehorning protocols

At the 41st Annual Conference of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners held in Charlotte, N.C., last month, researchers at the University of Guelph suggested the following when it comes to dehorning calves:

  • Develop a dehorning protocol. Include input from veterinarians and producers during development and implementation.
  • Consider using a nerve block at dehorning, unless using caustic paste.
  • Dehorn calves at a young age.
  • Consider using an approved non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug following dehorning.
